The informal retail sector is the economic backbone of many local South African communities, yet they remain trapped in a cash economy. Mastercard is collaborating with local tech company Spazapp to unlock their potential by enabling them to use its digital payment service Masterpass to pay for stock and accept cashless payments from their customers with their mobile phones. One such business is Chipo’s Hair Salon, a small salon in Tembisa owned by Chipo Tsokankupaza. This is her story about how payments technology is helping her to grow her business, and achieve her dreams.
